Chapter 1: Introduction
The Dolomites had always held a special place in Sönke's heart, a connection that went beyond the breathtaking peaks and the thrill of skiing. It was a connection that was woven into the very fabric of his family's history.
Sönke's grandmother, Fritzi, was born in Innsbruck in 1903. A lively and spirited young woman, she met her future husband, Carl Georg, in the very heart of the mountains she loved. Carl Georg, an assistant doctor at a clinic in Innsbruck, was drawn to Fritzi's vivacity and charm. They fell in love amidst the backdrop of the towering Dolomites, a love as enduring and majestic as the mountains themselves.
As a young bride, Fritzi followed Carl Georg to Kiel, leaving behind the mountains but carrying them in her heart. Together, they built a life and a family, raising seven children. The second youngest of those children Eckhard would become Sönke's father.
The stories of Fritzi and Carl Georg, their love, their adventures in the mountains, and their life in Kiel were passed down through the generations. Sönke grew up on these tales, each one a cherished family heirloom. The Dolomites were not just a destination; they were a part of his heritage.
Now, as he looked at the plane tickets and the itinerary for the upcoming skiing trip with his daughters, Gwen and Lea, Sönke felt a profound connection to his roots. This trip was not just about skiing; it was a journey back to a place that had shaped his family's destiny.
